HERE COMES MR. SAFETY! HE TELLS KIDS TO THINK AND STAY ALIVE

The statistics are startling. Every year 50,000 young Americans are killed in accidents. Every two days 34 children are killed by guns while 80 kids are abducted. Seventy percent of all fires resulting in death of a child are started by children. The chilling tragedies go on and on. If only kids knew better and thought more about safety.

Well, The Children's Safety Foundation Inc., led by Mr. Safety, England's legendary Jason Conrad, is hoping to come to the rescue by making safety education its mission. And the foundation hopes to achieve that end through fun. Coming soon is its biggest event to date in the United States - a special day at Sea World dubbed the Second-Annual Mr. Safety Poster Contest & Extravaganza. On Saturday, Oct. 15, parents and kids are invited to visit the theme park and see what is expected to be an entertaining - and enlightening - show.

All elementary school-age children in Orange County can participate in the contest by entering a drawing, painting or slogan about safety. There are 12 categories based on the internationally recognized safety code system developed by Conrad. Children may pick any one of the codes, such as traffic, fire, water or strangers, upon which to theme their entry. Entries can be individual or a joint effort by an entire class. The deadline for entries is Sept. 30.

At the extravaganza, which costs $18 for kids (a saving of $11.95), winning trophies will be awarded and Mr. Safety posters and records will be given away. Each child in attendance will be issued a Mr. Safety's Special Agent certificate. Plus, there will be plenty of other prizes and surprises from sponsors and local businesses. Sponsors include Central Florida Family.

In 1975, the British media dubbed Conrad Mr. Safety. Since then, he has received accolades and awards worldwide for his efforts in teaching children how to be more safe.

"National acclaim on the most successful, the most sensible and the most proven, teaching concept for Child Safety in the country."
